Our Gourmet Zagreb holiday introduces the cultural and gastronomic delights of Croatia's vibrant, fast-growing capital. It includes three nights' accommodation at the luxury Art Nouveau-inspired Hotel Regent Esplanade, a Croatian gourmet dinner with wine, an independent city walk of Zagreb's historical and cultural highlights and a stop for winetasting and lunch at a lovely vinoteka in the heart of Zagreb's historical downtown.
Designed, written and published by My Croatia, the Zagreb City Walk explores the cobbled lanes and Baroque squares of the Upper Town, the Cathedral and Archbishops' Palace on Kaptol, and the cultural pastiche of the Lower Town's Habsburg/Yugoslav/post-Yugoslav landscape. At the vinoteka, Diana and Mario, will introduce you to some of Croatia's best wines and producers. Tastings will include three to four different wines, accommpanied by food. For example, Tomac's sparkling wine from the Plesivica region just west of Zagreb, paired with smoked trout or caviar. Enjingi's celebrated white 'Venje' (Decanter magazine's 2004 World Wine Awards) from continental Croatia, paired with aged cheese and a traditional smoked ham from Croatia's Slavonia region. An indigenous Istrian variety such as Kozlovic's white Malvazija paired with polenta and truffles. Or Dubokovic's Plavac Mali red, paired with Dalmatian prosciutto and sheep's cheese from Pag Island.
Like all our bespoke holidays, Gourmet Zagreb can be tailor-made to include additional private, escorted day-trips. For example, west of the capital, a mountain range of cone-shaped hills and terraced vineyards is to Zagreb what the Vienna Woods and heurige of Grinzing are to Vienna. A day in the country could include wine tastings, lunch at a traditional country gostionica and a visit to the picturesque town of Samobor, its Baroque town square, market and medieval castle ruins. Another day trip can be arranged to the magnificent waterfalls and lakes of Plitvice National Park, a 2-hour drive south-east of Zagreb.
