Seven years ago Vlasta and Mirzo began restoring and renovating the tiny hamlet of Talez where Vlasta spent summer holidays as a child visiting her great grandmother Franina. Nestled beneath the crest of a pine-covered ridge two-hundred and twenty metres above the sea, the three-acre property commands spectacular views of Vis’s rugged southern coastline and the villages and vineyards of its interior central valley. The area is steeped in Illyrian and Greek mythology. Ruins of an ancient lighthouse, built during Roman times, lie a few hundred metres southwest of Talez above the cove of Vela Gomila.
The hamlet of Talez was founded in the early nineteenth century by the Borcic and Kordic families. Like their neighbours, they cultivated grapes and olives, grew beans, tomatoes and artichokes and raised goats for meat and cheese. The homestead prospered and its families grew as the demand for grapes increased over the century. At its zenith in 1885, Vis was producing over thirteen million litres of wine, and vineyards covered the island. Today the terraced slopes and drystone walls of Talez are gradually being reclaimed. Its stone dwellings and courtyard have been restored, and a large honey-coloured villa has been converted into three terraced cottages. A ‘summer kitchen’ and covered loggia offer splendid venues for al fresco dining and relaxing in the evening with a glass of wine or carob brandy. A landscaped garden connects the villa to the pool where a grove of magnificent cypresses filters the noonday sun and casts shadows over the wooded hillside.
Guest accommodation in the newly restored two-storey villa features three self-catering terraced cottages each containing kitchen, living room, bedroom, shower/bath and outdoor sitting area. Furnishings are comfortable and evoke a characterful, country ambiance. The property is ideal for a family or group of friends, but may also be rented per cottage for couples travelling alone.
