Kalafat is a Dalmatian word, borrowed from the Italian calafato, meaning craftsman or builder of wooden ships. Korcula’s shipbuilding tradition goes back to medieval times and reached its zenith in the eighteenth century when Venice transferred its navel base and shipyards here. Casa Kalafata, located in the heart of historic Korcula - in the old ‘shipbuilders’ quarters - is a newly-restored two-storey townhouse. Built from limestone quarried on the island of Vrnik, the house incorporates Old World traditions with contemporary designs and amenities. The ground floor features a large kitchen/dining area and tiled shower room. A small table and wooden benches on the street in front of the house provides a pleasant spot for morning coffee and getting to know your neighbours. The two upper floors contain a living room and double bedroom. The walk-through living room contains a sofa/bed and table that seats four. The bedroom contains a cozy sitting area and washbasin/dressing corner. The property features hardwood floors, exposed ceiling beams, warm, natural materials and handcrafted furniture made by local artisans. Many of the pieces, including the shutters and window frames, are painted in the traditional sea-green pigments typical of small Dalmatian fishing boats.
While perfect for a couple, Casa Kalafata may also accommodate a group of friends or small family. Its priviledged location in the centre of Korcula Old Town with shops, cafes, bars and restaurants just steps away makes it an ideal pied a terre and base for exploring the rest of the island. The area’s most beautiful beaches and swimming spots are located on the islands that dot the sea between Korcula Town and Lumbarda and can be reached by taxi boats that operate from the town harbour. Orebic, Peljesac and Mljet Island are also nearby and extremely well-connected by ferry and catamaran service.
