This historic captain's house is typical of the villas built by the wealthy families of Orebic at the end of the 19th century. The owners come from a long line of sailors and sea captains whose sailing boats and steamships carried goods and passengers to ports around the world. Built in 1885 from white stone quarried on the island of Vrnik, the original two-storey villa was painted in colourful Mediterranean hues, inspired by journeys along the coast of France. In the 1950's, the plaster facade was removed after damage by a fire. Later adaptations included the refurbishment and addition of six self-catering apartments. On the second floor are two apartments with terrace and sea views, selected for My Croatia clients.
Entry to the villa is through a large, shady garden at the rear of the property. A flagstone path winds its way between fig and lemon trees, while to the side a covered terrace provides a pleasant spot for simple al fresco meals. Immediately behind the house is the parish church of Orebic with its signature belltower and centuries-old stand of pine and cypress. The location is perfect if you want to experience the flavour of this old seafaring town, hear the water wash the pebbles on the beach, and enjoy the close proximity to shops, market, cafés, bars and restaurants. The present owner lives in a separate apartment on the villa's ground floor, with her own entrance and garden.
