The word stancija in Croatian refers to a walled rural country estate, consisting of a central villa, adjoining outbuildings and farmhouses, and living quarters for workers and servants. Stancija 1904, named for the year in which it was built, is a beautifully restored country estate in the southern Istrian village of Smoljanci, halfway between the seaside towns of Porec and Rovinj. Shaded by the leafy boughs of a centuries-old ladonja, the self-catering stone farmhouse and adjoining apartments are authentic restorations of the original buildings, with tastefully designed interiors, smart tiled floors, and fully equipped modern bathrooms and kitchens. Flagstone footpaths and beautifully landscaped terraces link each residence to the large, three-storey stucco family home where the owners, Drazenka and Rolf, live with their daughter Vera and beloved pup Cha-cha. Gracious and amiable hosts, they will welcome you into the warmth of their ambiental country konoba for delicious country breakfasts and dinners. Many of the herbs and vegetables Drazenka uses, come from the estate's own kitchen garden. The rich red soil of southern Istria provides excellent conditions for farming and viniculture. Fresh poultry, meat and dairy products are all available locally, and the family's wine cellar is well stocked with the area's best vintage wines and grappas. An excellent cook and devotee to traditional Istrian cuisine, Drazenka's mouthwatering homemade fritule are the best we've ever tasted!
