Life in medieval Dubrovnik was precarious at best. Despite the city's defense walls and towers, the threat of attack from marauders and foreign fleets was constant. Pressed between the sea and mountains, escape was not an option. Disaster was often swift as with fires, earthquakes and the accidental explosion of gunpowder in the city's arsenals. Nevertheless, life continued and the city expanded wherever it could. A labyrinth of cobbled streets and passageways pushed uphill towards the eastern walls. With space at a premium, houses were built tall and narrow, their front doors opening directly to the street. Hotel Old Town, a 400-year old renovated townhouse, is just off Stradun, at the edge of this historic quarter. Once the home to an aristocratic Dubrovnik family, many of the interior's original embellishments have been preserved. Its eight double and single rooms are comfortable and well appointed. All have tall ceilings and double French windows, period furniture and textiles in shades of coral and gold. In fine weather, breakfast is served outdoors, on a small rooftop terrace, with spectacular views of the entire Old Town - rooftops, cathedrals, church spires, walls and towers. Restaurants, cafés, bars and shops are a stone's throw away, as are the city's glittering palaces and cultural monuments, museums, markets and pebbly beaches.
