Our Holidays : Dubrovnik : Dubrovnik Land and Sea

Dubrovnik is a singular destination. Its beauty rests in the splendor of its palaces and marble squares, and in the drama and serenity of its coastal mountains and off-shore islands. Our Dubrovnik Land and Sea Holiday features a guided walk of Dubrovnik's historic Old Town and a private journey south of the city to the hidden oases of Konavle. It also includes our Gourmet Travel Notes to the Elafiti Islands, a destination we recommend as an independent day trip using local ferry service from Gruz harbour.

The Dubrovnik city walk is an informal, 4-hour, guided tour that begins with cappuccino at an outdoor cafe on Stradun. It includes walking the city walls and narrow historic streets, visiting the local market, peeking into churches and palaces. It features lunch with wine at a restaurant in the old city harbour and can also be tailored to include a private boat trip to Lokrum Island for a dip in the sea.

Konavle is a region south of Dubrovnik stretching from the coastal town of Cavtat to the Montenegrin border. The landscape is a canvas of arid plateaus, sun-bleached mountains and fertile valleys famous for its olive oil, fruit and organic farm products. An informal day of exploring, in the company of an expert local guide, will take you to Konavle's hinterland and secret places, the ancient Greek settlement of Cavtat and the village of Cilipi best known for its beautiful embroidered textiles and traditional folk dancing. Besides learning about the area's history and culture, you will experience its flavours and lifestyle from a refreshingly personal, insider's point of view. The day's peregrinations will take to you to the Ljuta River and a 400-year-old watermill, Cavtat's seaside cafes and bougainvillea-trellised villas, and lunch with your host at a traditional Konavle restaurant.

The Elafiti Islands lie northwest of Dubrovnik – a stunning archipelago of pine-fringed coves and rocky beaches - only three of which are inhabited. The easiest and most affordable way of getting there is to catch one of the ferries that sail from Gruz harbour. Our Gourmet Travel Notes give a brief description of the islands and various ports of call, plus information on where to find the best, off-the-beaten-track, places to eat.
