Pile (pronounced pea-lay) is a residential area of historic importance, immediately adjacent to the fortified walls of the Old Town and the Pile Gates from which it takes its name. Built in the 16th century, the Gate remains the main entrance to the City. It is also the first place of disembarkment for visitors arriving by bus from the airport in Cilipi. Crisscrossing the hillside that ascends to the east, polished stone terraces and long flights of stairs burnish bright and smooth in the afternoon sun. Miha Klaic Street is a quiet pedestrian walkway, lined with 19th century stone facades and cascading tiers of oleander, clematis and bougainvillae. At the top of the street, near a tiny chapel and belfry - a five-minute walk from the Pile Gates - sits the home of Jadranka and Milan Benussi, shaded by the rich Mediterranean foliage of a secluded hillside park. Inside Number 10, a narrow flight of stairs leads to a large lower-level terrace and two brand new self-catering apartments overlooking the sea and the mighty Lovrijenac Fortress. Both apartments have a small living-dining area, kitchen nook with stove and fridge, double twin bedroom and bathroom with shower. Sliding glass doors access the terrace and garden and provide plenty of light and sunshine. Terracotta Italian floor tiles, exposed stone walls and ambiental lighting make for warm, comfortable interiors. The shared terrace offers privacy with splendid views and the opportunity for alfresco dining in the company of almond, orange and loquat trees.
